Joyfully Serving the People of Latvia

In July of 2019, a team of seven traveled to Latvia to bring support to those who serve full-time in this northern European country. On-site missionaries, Juris and Kristine, are developing a retreat ministry for families called "The Cave" on a piece of land that is in need of significant repair.

Trip participant, Kevin Barclay, said of the experience, "Although part of the trip included performing construction-related tasks [And the team did complete a tremendous amount of work!], there were other facets outside of these projects for which God utilized our team. Being able to minister to our missionaries, provide fellowship, encouragement, connection and community, was also a vital part." Fellow team member, George Maxson, says, "What an amazing opportunity to further the ministry of our partners in Latvia!"

Tracy Maxson, VMC's Missions Director, had a completely different experience from the men on the team. She traveled to other ministry sites and to visit missionary, Cheryl Harrison.  She says,

"I first traveled to Valdemarpils where VMC started the joint venture with our missionaries over 25 years ago. It was quite an adventure to travel alone by bus, not knowing the language! I stayed two nights at Freedom 61, which offers hope and restoration to women coming out of sexual exploitation. A few years ago, we sent teams to help restore this building. Now finished, it looks wonderful. I spent time in Jurmala where Cheryl lives and got to know her on a deeper level. My last stop was Riga, which allowed me to see the rich history of the capitol of Latvia. I attended a YWAM meeting and met people from around the world. Overall, my experience helped me to understand first-hand the ministries we have partnered with for so many years. It's hard to see those who are lost and hurting in this beautiful country, but it is also good to know that there are people bringing the light of Jesus there."
